Miss Great Britain 2003 Nicki Lane in the pits with Neil Hodgson's Ducati Fila 999F03 Superbike. The Fast Dates Calendar girls including Nicki were again tthis year the official Team Ducati Corse umbrella girls at the 2003 Laguna Seca USA round of the World Superbike Championship.

FastDates.com model Miss Great Britain 2003 Nicki Lane pairs
with Ducati Corse World Champ and fellow Brit, Neil Hodgson

History was made as "Nicki" Nicola Lane, formerly Miss Great Britain 1999, became the first girl to ever win her home country's national Miss World title twice. One of our favorite calendar models, Nicki was sponsored by the FastDates.com Motorsports Calendars and Websitefor the 2003 Miss Great Britain pageant leading up to this year's Miss World competition. Nicki wore a FastDates.com sash on stage during portions of her competition and when she was crowned at the end.

Nicki Lane will be familiar to American sportbike fans who may have seen her in America last summer 2002 where she was working with FastDates.com, serving as an official SBK World Superbike Fast Dates Calendar model at Laguna Seca World Superbike shooting for the calendar in the paddock with the top factory race bikes, and on Sunday Nicki also served as the official Team Ducati Corse umbrella girl for SBK World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss.

Nicki again returned to America this year at the invitation of FastDates.com Calendar producer Jim Gianatsis and Paolo Ciabatti, Marketing Director at Ducati Corse, to be a Fast Dates Calendar model at Laguna Seca World Superbike where she also served as official Ducati Corse team umbrella girls on Sunday for the former British Superbike National Champion and now 2003 World Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson. "We couldn't be more pleased to have FastDates.com be part of a such a world class championship winning combination." said Paolo Ciabatti.

"I really had an incredible time coming back to California with FastDates.com in July for the 2003 World Superbike race at Laguna Seca and shooting with Neil's Ducati 999F for next year's Fast Dates calendar, as well as being Neil's umbrella girl on the starting grid. It really was a busy and wonderfully exciting weekend! Now I'm off to Hong Kong for the 2003 Miss World Finals -so wish me luck. Cheers!" -Nicki Lane, Miss Great Britain 1999 and 2003.

Nicki is featured on the cover and inside the currently available 2004 Fast Dates Calendar sponsored by Performance Machine, Corona Suzuki, and MotoWheels.com with many of the top world superbikes including Troy Bayliss' factory Ducati 998F-02 photographed at last year's Laguna Seca SBK round. And in the 2004 Garage Girls Calendar with other SBK Fast Dates Calendar model and Ducati Corse umbrella girls Chandi Mason and Janelle Perzina. Both Nicki, Chandi and Janelle will be featured in the 2005 Fast Dates available this next July 2004, with no doubt, a picture similar to the one here of Nicki with Neil Hodgson's championship winning Ducati 999F03 on the cover.

Dream Machines:
Ducati Launches Three New Classic Concept Bikes in Tokyo

Inspired by the Sportbikes of the 1970s, Ducati’s Three Sport Classic Prototypes are
the Stuff of Enthusiast’s Dreams

Tokyo Motorshow, 22nd October 2003 – “Our dreams live in the legends of racing, in riders like Paul Smart who helped us to write some of the most wonderful pages in the history of world motorcycling. Our dreams live in the simple and classic lines, the rich details and the colours of those trail-blazing Ducati sport bikes of the 1970s.

The three bikes that we are unveiling today represent the perfect mixture of winning technology - always a Ducati hallmark - with the timeless beauty of Ducati Design. PaulSmart, Sport, GT - three motorcycles designed to wet the appetites of enthusiasts everywhere, giving our Ducatisti, we hope, something to dream about. The bikes you see today are one-off items. They are not for sale. And yet, at Ducati we know that dreams sometimes come true.”

It was with these words that Federico Minoli, President of Ducati Motor Holding, presented the company’s three concept bikes to the press at the opening of this year’s Tokyo Motorshow.Whilst all three machines embody the same essential concept, timeless Ducati design linked with high performance, the individual designs, named PaulSmart 1000, GT 1000 and Sport 1000 offer three particular expressions of Ducati heritage while utilizing the latest and most innovative Ducati technologies.

The PaulSmart 1000 is inspired by the 750 Imola on which Paul Smart rode to victory in the historic 200 Miles of Imola in 1972. The PaulSmart 1000 bike brings the spirit of its predecessor back to life with levels of performance able that surpass the expectations of today’s most demanding two-wheel enthusiasts.

The GT 1000 is a sport bike eminently suitable for everyday use, striking a perfect balance between the comfort of a two-seater and the performance of a two-cylinder Desmo. Tradition and stylish elegance are merged seamlessly in this machine, made even more interesting by high-spec componentry and by the handling and safety typical of present-day Ducati motorcycles.

The Sport 1000 is a gutsy “Café Racer”. Ducati through-and-through, with a coat of bold Ducati yellow paint, the Sport delivers timeless good looks and excitement that fans and enthusiasts expect of all Ducati sport bikes.

All three bikes are equipped with the Desmo 1000 DS engine and cut a stylish figure with the unmistakable tubular tressle frame, characteristic of models made in Borgo Panigale. State-of-the-art engineering solutions make these three machines benchmarks in terms of technology, design and performance. Clearly, Japan is an important launch scenario for the SportClassic family. It is also a significant market, where the Ducati marque enjoys popularity and is seen as a genuine status symbol. The Japanese have always had an eye for exclusive products – witnessed by the success of the MH900 in this market.

Petronas Unveils Malaysia's First Production Superbike
World-class road version of a new race-tested machine

October 23rd: PETRONAS today unveiled the much anticipated road version of its PETRONAS FP1 motorcycle, Malaysia's very own first superbike. The launch of the machine was held at PETRONAS' fine art gallery, the GALERI PETRONAS, in Kuala Lumpur and was officiated by Malaysia's Minister of Youth and Sports Dato' Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. The event was also graced by the presence of PETRONAS' Chairman Tan Sri Dato' Seri Azizan Zainul Abidin.

Also present at the launch was Carl Fogarty, Principal of the Foggy PETRONAS Racing Team that has been "charting up considerable success" with the race version of the bike in the World Superbike Championship race circuits.

A total of 150 units of the road version of the FP1 have been manufactured to meet the condition set by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) before it could allow the Foggy PETRONAS Racing Team to compete in the World Superbike Championship. The first batch of 75 units of the bikes was manufactured in the United Kingdom and had passed inspection in March of this year. The second batch of the bikes was assembled in Malaysia by PETRONAS using the resources and facilities of motorcycle manufacturer, MODENAS.

The FP1 began as a prototype engine undertaken by SAUBER PETRONAS Engineering AG (SPE), a joint venture formed in 1996 between Sauber Holdings and PETRONAS to further add value to their relationship forged a year earlier in the Formula One arena. SPE has since progressed from just meeting the engineering
needs of the SAUBER PETRONAS Formula One Team to embarking on several projects, the most notable of which are the EO1 two-litre car engine and the GP1, the prelude to the FP1, using cutting-edge Formula One technology. Other initiatives included R&D in the areas of fuel and lubricant technology.
Gurun, Kedah. This batch passed FIM's inspection in July. Of the 150 units, PETRONAS will make available to interested superbike enthusiasts 100 units of this limited edition of the PETRONAS FP1.

Mladin Named Cycle News Rider Of The Year
COSTA MESA, CA, OCT. 20
Four-time AMA Superbike National Champion Mat Mladin has been named as the Cycle News Rider of the Year for 2003 and will be featured prominently in the year-end issue of Cycle News, America’s Weekly Motorcycle Newspaper – an issue that goes on sale December 10.

The 31-year-old Australian became the first four-time winner of the AMA’s most prestigious road racing title this year, his 2003 title going with his three straight AMA Superbike crowns in 1999, 2000 and 2001. En route to winning the title, Mladin won 10 races, matching the AMA record set in 1984 by Fred Merkel.

After his outstanding 2003 season, Mladin is also now only two races wins away from matching Miguel Duhamel as the leader on the AMA’s all-time Superbike class win list. In total, Mladin has amassed 24 Superbike victories in his eight-year AMA career.

Mladin, who rode a Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 to this year’s title, becomes the 12th recipient of the prestigious award and the third road racer to do so, joining the first-ever Cycle News Rider of the Year Wayne Rainey (1992), fellow Australian Mick Doohan (1997) and Kenny Roberts Jr. (2000). Three-time World Champion Kenny Roberts was named as the Cycle News Rider of the Century in 2000.

“When the staff sat down to discuss the 2003 racing season, Mat’s accomplishments jumped out at us – making this year’s decision fairly easy,” said Paul Carruthers, the editor of Cycle News. “While several others had incredible seasons in ’03, none were as dominant as Mladin. The fact that he set or matched records along the way made his season even more impressive.”

Naturally, Mladin was pleased with the selection as it puts the perfect capper on his 2003 season.

“It is an honor to be named Cycle News Rider of the Year,” Mladin said. “Many great riders have accepted this award before me and it makes a great season that we have just had a lot sweeter.”

MLADIN NOMINATED FOR AMA PRO RACING SPEED CHANNEL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Oct. 20, 2003) -- Mat Mladin, the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Champion, has been named as a nominee for the AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year. The 31-year-old Aussie became the first rider in the history of AMA Superbike racing to win four championships when he wrapped up the 2003 title at the series finale at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., in September. Mladin had a spectacular season in AMA Superbike competition riding his factory Yoshimura Suzuki to 10 race wins, tying the nearly 20-year-old record of AMA Superbike wins in a single season set by Fred Merkel in 1984.

Mladin is being nominated for the Athlete of the Year Award for the fourth time. He won the prestigious prize in 2000 after earning his second AMA Superbike title. Mladin was also nominated in 1999 and in 2001. Mladin gave much of the credit for his fourth championship to his crew.

Rossi expected to choose between Yamaha and Ducati for 2004
Oct 11th: We told you a month ago that Ducati had been courting Valentino Rossi to move to the Ducati MotoGP team next year. In the time since then, Valentio has also been approached by the Yamaha factory team to join them, and the Ducati offer had seemed to loose it's momentum.

But this weekend at Sepang the word in thre Paddock was that Ducati had re approached Rossi and they were back in the hunt to sign the world's best motorcycle racer.

Just the fact that Valentio is not not happy working with Honda (a Japanese company), still makes us think the Italian star would much rather ride for the smaller Italian manufactuer Ducati, rather than Honda. Remember, it was Colin Edward's displeasure with upper management at Honda of Japan that saw the then reigning 2002 World Superbike Champion leave Honda to ride for Aprilia in MotoGP this season.

ABE TO REPLACE INJURED MELANDRI FOR VALENCIA GRAND PRIX
Ost 23rd: The Fortuna Yamaha Team has announced today that Norick Abe will ride as a
replacement for Marco Melandri at the season-closing Valencia Grand Prix in Spain on Sunday 2nd November. Melandri will undergo an operation to his
right shoulder on Monday 27th October in Forli, Italy so will be forced to miss the last round of the 2003 MotoGP World Championship.

Abe will compete in Fortuna Yamaha Team colours for the third time this year, having already stepped in to replace Melandri at the season-opening Suzuka and Welkom races
in April. Twenty-eight-year-old Japanese rider Abe is a former GP regular who finished
sixth in the 2002 Championship. In 2003 Abe has ridden as Yamaha's factory test rider and competed in several rounds as a wildcard.

MotoGP rookie Melandri suffered a dislocation to his right shoulder and haematoma to his left heel when he fell during last Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The 21-year-old was in the midst of a mighty
battle amongst the top three riders when he highsided and fell from his M1 machine halfway through the race. Melandri made a characteristically quick recovery, with his dislocated
shoulder popped back in place at the circuit clinic even before the race was over. However, further examinations in Italy this week have revealed that
the damage to the young Italian's right shoulder cap is worse than was initially diagnosed, and that an operation is necessary for it to heal correctly. After consultation with Melandri and the team it was agreed that it made sense for Melandri to undergo surgery now so as not to risk further
injury and to ensure a full recovery in time for the 2004 pre-season testing
in January.
