Marlboro
Portuguese Grand Prix, Estoril, 3/4/5 September 2004 - Preview
Ducati
MotoGP Taem Confident for Estoril After Bruno Tests
Sept 1st -The Ducati Marlboro
Team comes to the EstorilMotoGP round this coming weekend boosted
by a fruitful Brno test session following the recent Czech Grand
Prix. After achieving top-five results at both the Czech and
British GPs the team clocked impressive lap times during the
Brno session, putting both Loris Capirossi and Troy Bayliss
in confident mood for Sundayís Marlboro Portuguese GP,
round 11 of this yearís 16-race MotoGP World Championship.
"Those
two days at Brno were very useful in continuing the evolution
of the Desmosedici GP4, so we are looking forward to getting
back into action at Estoril," says Ducati Marlboro Team
director Livio Suppo. ìDuring this season weíve
had two priorities. First, to develop a user-friendly engine,
and both riders are now very happy with the Twin Pulse motor.
Second, to develop the chassis, so the bike feels easier to
ride. Both Loris and Troy rode a lot of dry laps during the
Brno tests, evaluating new Ohlins suspension settings, and both
now feel more comfortable on the bike, with Loris feeling good
enough to lap consistently faster than he had managed in the
race. Everyone at Ducati Corse is working as hard as possible
to continue evolving the bike and we hope that Estoril will
allow us to prove that we have taken another step forward"
Estoril
is a tortuous, twisting circuit with the slowest average lap
speed in MotoGP, at just 151kmh/93mph. But that doesnít
make it an easy racetrack for riders or engineers. The track
is a mass of contrasts ñ with a 321kmh/200mph main straight,
plus the slowest corner in MotoGP (the final chicane, which
riders tackle at a pedestrian 60kmh/37mph) and also one the
fastest (turn five, which riders attack at over 220kmh/136mph).
These contrasts demand some compromises in chassis set-up, with
riders requiring manoeuvrability in the tight corners and stability
in the sweepers. These two characteristics are not mutually
exclusive but it takes expert technicians to create a motorcycle
that excels in both situations.
"What
we look for wherever we go is a suspension set-up that makes
the bike easier to handle and more stable, and this is particularly
important at Estoril," says Ducati Marlboro Team technical
director Corrado Cecchinelli. "Normally these two characteristics
arenít easy to achieve together but with careful work
on suspension it is possible. We have made a big step forward
with the Twin Pulse engine, now we are matching that engine
improvement with an improved suspension set-up that will give
us a good base set-up for every racetrack. Estoril is a very
twisty circuit, so rapid steering is very important. Itís
also a track that we donít know that well ñ weíve
only spent three days there in total ñ though last year
we had a good race."
CAPIROSSI
READY TO MAKE USE OF LATEST IMPROVEMENTS
Loris Capirossi was in superb form at the Brno tests. Now the
Ducati Marlboro Team man intends to use the lessons learned
during that outing to get his Desmosedici GP4 back up front
at Estoril. "We tried out many small set-up modifications
during the tests that allowed me to lap more than half a second
faster than I had during the Brno race," says Capirossi."Not
only that, I was also able to maintain a rapid pace more easily,
because the bike is now more comfortable to ride."
"Estoril
is a very different kind of track from Brno but we believe that
the improvements weíve made will benefit us, wherever
we go. The track isnít bad, though the first corner is
a bit of a joke and the last chicane is really, really tight.
The straight is long, which helped me to beat Sete (Gibernau)
last year. My favourite corner is turn five. This is one of
the greatest corners in MotoGP- fourth or fifth gear at maybe
230kmh and then you hook sixth onto the back straight. It's
a lot of fun, when you get it right!

the end of August might be a slow week in motorcycle racing.
There's nothing left in American roadracing for AMA Pro

so the print magazines can bore us with their annual "Exclusive

Meet
the "Fonz"
Lanzi
to race AMA Superbike
VIR,
Aug 14th - Ducati's World Supersport rider Lorenzo Lanzi
did quicke lap times than their US Austin Ducati Superbike
rider Eric Bostrom at recent tests both in Europe and
a Virginia Interntaional Raceway.
Ducati
Corse's plan is to now have Lanzi join Bostrom at the
VIR AMA National on an equal Ducati Superbike on Michelin
tires.
Lanzi will not be racing at Road Atlanta as there is a
date conflict. The World Supersport series is in action
at Assen on the Atlanta weekend. E's chances for being
resigned by the Ducati team for next year are looking
pretty slim without a top finish.

Mladin
Hoping to Extend Superbike lead at Road Atlanta Sept 3-5th
Aussie is the all-time AMA Superbike
wins leader at Road Atlanta
Aug. 27, 2004 -- Defending AMASuperbike Champ
Mathew Mladin is on course to earn his fifth AMA Chevrolet Superbike
title and a pair of wins at the AMA Suzuki Superbike Showdown
by Makita Doubleheader on Sept. 3-5, could put the Australian
Yoshimura Suzuki rider one step closer to the 2004 championship.
Mladin is one of three former winners at Road Atlanta set to
race in rounds 15 and 16 of the 18-race championship. Miguel
Duhamel and Georgia's own Aaron Yates have also won AMA Superbike
races at the challenging Braselton circuit. As the championship
hits the homestretch, Mladin is leading Erion Honda Superbike
newcomer Jake Zemke by 21 points. Mladin built his series lead
by way of a lightning quick start of the season, winning five
of the first six rounds. He then went through a mid-season dry
spell going six
rounds without a win before getting back atop the podium at
Mid-Ohio in late July.
Road
Atlanta has been a roller-coaster ride for Mladin over the
years. On the upside, he can claim to be the winningest AMA
Superbike rider ever at the track. He swept the doubleheader
in 2000 and then came back to take one of the two rounds in
2001 and again last year. He's also had some very close calls
on the high-speed circuit; once being forced to avoid an ambulance
that was on the track and then holding on to his Suzuki last
year when the bike's rear tire failed at high speed. Only
a man with steely nerves, like Mladin, could put incidents
like that out of his mind and come back to win on the very
same track. The fact that Mladin was the fastest in testing
at the track only solidifies the view that he is the Road
Atlanta pre-race favorite.
"It's
nice to now have that 21-point break over Jake in the championship,
and with just four races to go we have to try hard to hang
on to it. We've got Road Atlanta and Virginia International
Raceway to
finish off the season and I think we should be able to put
a good package together for both of those tracks," says
Mladin. If Zemke is to close in on the champ he will have
to accomplish something he's never done at Road Atlanta -
win. As a leading AMA Formula Xtreme and Supersport competitor
over recent years, Zemke has won his share of races, but never
at Road Atlanta.
"I've
always been in contention at Road Atlanta," Zemke said.
"I had a good shot of winning (in Formula Xtreme) in
'02 before going down in (Jason) Pridmore's oil. On the restart
I charged all the way from the back of the grid to third so
I don't think there's any particular reason I haven't won
there. I've had a number of podium finishes so I feel like
I go pretty well there. We've got some points to make up,
but a lot can happen in four races so we're going to take
it one race at a time and see what happens."
Duhamel,
who won at Road Atlanta in 1998 in a thrilling last-turn pass
on Anthony Gobert, has fallen to third in the championship
after crashing his factory Honda in the most recent round
in Lexington, Ohio. As a result of the crash the Montreal
native went from just 10 points behind Mladin and second in
the standings to third in the series, 44 points out of the
series lead. Duhamel, the 1995 AMA Superbike champ, now needs
a little luck to get back in the championship picture. Brothers
Eric and Ben Bostrom are still mathematically in the race
for the championship, but realistically the two are battling
for fourth in the standings. Both Eric and Ben have both won
races this year and would love to add to that tally. It's
been five years since a Ducati won at Road Atlanta. Eric would
love to help the Italian maker get back on the
top rung of the podium.
Georgia
has long been an Eastern hotbed of road racing talent. This
year local fans will again have a number of home state heroes
to root for. Chief among the Georgian riders is Suzuki's Yates.
The Milledgeville resident is having a disappointing season,
but has still managed three podium finishes this season. He
hopes racing at his home track will find him getting his first
win in nearly a year. Other top Georgian riders at Road Atlanta
will include last year's rookie of the year Geoff May, an
Atlanta native who now lives in West Palm Beach, Florida.
May is a solid fifth in the standings riding a Team Prieto
Racing Suzuki. Opie Caylor,
form Marietta, is another leading privateer rider in the series.
Both
Road Atlanta Superbike races will be broadcast nationally
on SPEED Channel on Sunday, Sept. 5, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern
time. Sunday's race will be shown live at 3 p.m. Eastern.

HAYDEN
BREAKS COLLARBONE IN TRAINING
ACCIDENT
Sunday 29th
August 2004 - Repsol Honda Team star, Nicky Hayden broke his right
collarbone in a training accident in Italy yesterday afternoon
(Sunday). The 23-year-old American fell from a Honda CRF450 whilst
training in Pavia, near Milan in northern Italy. He is under the
care of MotoGP doctor, Dr Claudio Costa, and has had a plate inserted
by the specialist in a short operation yesterday afternoon.
A decision
as the whether Hayden will take part in the next GP in Estoril,
Portugal, scheduled next weekend (Sept 3rd- 5th) will be taken
after his condition has been accessed by his medical team and
the Repsol Honda Team in due course.
Nicky currently
sits in 6th position in this year's MotoGP Championship with 63
points a good distance behind the Championship leaders Sete Gibernau,
also on Honda, with 167 points and Yamaha's Valentino Rossi.
This is Nicky's
2nd season on the factory Repsol Honda MotoGP team and he is finally
starting to finish near the front of the pack on a consistant
basis after a lackluster first season. Depending on how this broken
collarbone affects Nicky in the few remaing races of the year
could determine his fate with the Honda GP Team for next season.
Even if the injury does affect his rding , his only saving grace
is that Honda has very few new riders that are waiting in the
wings.

The
MotoGP Deal for Laguna Seca
The rumor mill has Laguna Seca signing a 5 year deal to secure
MotoGP in America, with a special price concession on the $1.5
plus million dollar sanction fee the first 2 years to get the
event established here.
Unfirtunately MotoGP gets a exclusive to all the sponsorships
and signagre it beings to the track for its one race, so Laguna
Seca Raceway must make its sole income form spectator ticket prices
and venders.
Knowing that
the Laguna Seca facility (aka Mazda Raceway) can not accomodate
more than 30,000 people at best, and that they will have production
costs around $250,000 (employees, police, advertising, equiment
rental, etc), the track will need to make $2 million to turn a
profit, they need to charge at least $67.00 for a base general
admission ticket.
Combine it
with an AMA Superbike weekend, required FIM track imporverments,
etc., and ticket prices could start closer to $100 each. Certainly
in line with the ticket prices now shown on the Laguna Seca website
at $55 for 1-day, $90 for a 3-day General Admission Pass, and
$25 Paddock.
SBK
looking for new World Superbike Venue
in America
Despite the loss of its veue at laguna Seca, FGSports producer
of the SBK World Superbike Championship would like to return to
America in 2005. One minor glich is, that at present no motorcycle
track in America is FIM approved, including Barbour Motorsports
Park.
Lanzi
is Quicker at VIR
Eric on the Ropes?
VIR,
Aug 14th - Lorenzo Lanzi did lap quicker than Eric Bostrom at
the Virginia International Raceway test. In Lanzi's first ride
at the track, andin America, and the Corse Supersport rider lapped
slightly faster than Eric Bostrom after a two-day test plagued
by rain. Ducati's World Supersport rider backed up last weeks
impressive lap times at Mugello in Italy where he was quicker
than Bostrom there, as well. Eric's fast lapat VIR was a 1:26.7
while Lanzi posted a 1:26.4.
Ducati's plan
is to now have Lanzi join Bostrom at the VIR race on an equal
Ducati Superbike on Michelin tires.
Lanzi will not be racing at Road Atlanta as there is a date conflict.
The World Supersport series is in action at Assen on the Atlanta
weekend
Great
