2005 MotoGP World Championship, Galouises Dutch TT Round 7 of 12

Rossi Celebrates 75th Gauloises Dutch TT with a Win
Assen, Netherlands , June 23-25th -
Valentino Rossi once again proved that he is the man for the big occasion as he took victory in the 75th anniversary of the Gauloises TT Assen in another exciting MotoGP race on Saturday. Rossi’s sixth win from the opening seven rounds of the 2005 series was also his fifth in succession, the longest winning run by a Yamaha rider in the history of motorcycle racing’s premier-class, and extended his lead to 63 points over Honda’s Marco Melandri, who was second today. Two weeks ahead of their own 50th anniversary celebrations at Laguna Seca, Yamaha’s joy was complete today as Rossi’s team-mate Colin Edwards also stepped up to the podium with third place.

“Today was another hard battle, as it has been all season,” said Rossi. “Melandri was very strong today and he came back to fight until the end. I had to keep pushing at 100% and really concentrate, especially on the last lap, when I made no mistakes and the fastest lap of the race. It was incredible for everybody. I can’t believe that I am the first Yamaha rider to win five races in a row, when you look at the company I am in with Yamaha’s former World Champions – Agostini, Lawson, Roberts and Rainey… it’s great!”

Dutch TT History and Preview
Coinciding with the year of Yamaha’s 50th anniversary, two legendary players in the history of motorcycle racing come together this weekend as the Gauloises Yamaha Team heads to the historic circuit of Assen for the 75th edition of the Dutch TT. With a 58-point advantage at the top of the rider standings, Valentino Rossi will look to continue his sensational start to his fourth consecutive title defence with another victory in the seventh round of the MotoGP World Championship, the Gauloises Dutch TT in Assen.

With five victories and one second-place so far this season, the Italian heads to Assen, the only Grand Prix to have remained on the World Championship calendar since it began back in 1949, in better shape than ever. His points lead is the biggest after six rounds of a premier-class World Championship since former Yamaha superstar Giacamo Agostini in the late 1960s, and an early morning test less than 24 hours after his most recent victory at Catalunya last week underlined his determination to keep on winning.

The Italian has tasted victory at the Dutch TT four times in the different Grand Prix classes, whilst his Gauloises Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards also knows all about winning at Assen. The American took three victories there in the World Superbike series, including a double win on the way to reclaiming the title from Troy Bayliss in a gripping climax to the 2002 season. He is confident of rejoining the battle for podium positions in Assen, after two difficult races at Mugello and Catalunya have seen him lose ground on the championship leaders, despite consolidating sixth place in the current rider standings.

Assen has been the scene of hard work over the last few months for the completion of a ‘floating’ grandstand, which meets new MotoGP safety regulations by allowing the gravel trap in the Geert Timmer corner to actually run underneath the stand. Two changes have also been made to the layout of the racetrack, which is now 30 metres shorter.

As is tradition, the Dutch TT will be held on the final Saturday in June, although this year it will feature a slightly different time schedule to the other rounds of the MotoGP World Championship. Whilst both practice days on Thursday and Friday will follow the regular timetable, Saturday’s schedule will start with the warm-up sessions from 8:20am to 10:05am in order to accommodate a host of support races. Despite this, the MotoGP race will still start at 2pm as usual.

Capirossi signals Ducati revival in Practice at Assen
Practice Thursday 23rd - Two years after setting pole position for the Dutch TT in his first season with Ducati at Assen, Loris Capirossi today sparked hopes of a revival for the Italian factory with the fastest lap on the opening day of action at the 75th anniversary of the famous event. The Italian struggled to eleventh place in the last round at Catalunya, just seven days after his first podium of the season at Mugello, but his early pace in Holland suggests he can be back to challenge for the Italian factory’s second MotoGP victory in Saturday’s historic race.

“We are in a much better situation than we were at Barcelona two weeks ago but we need to work on bike set-up to get more out of the tyres,” said Capirossi. “The front is fine but we’re still trying to find a good rear for the race. I did my fastest lap at the end of the session on my number two bike with a race rear I hadn’t used before so we’ll test that tyre for more laps tomorrow. At the moment we’re not super-competitive in race trim but Bridgestone are working so hard that we have got a lot of new tyres to try here.”

Despite Capirossi’s late charge there is little doubt that the dominant force throughout the day was current series leader Valentino Rossi, who set the pace for the morning practice and most of the afternoon on the Yamaha before ultimately being bettered by his compatriot. Honda’s Sete Gibernau trailed Rossi for most of the day and ended up third fastest on the combined time sheets, 0.197 seconds adrift of the World Champion.

Alex Barros began his quest to repeat his 500cc victory here from 2000 with the fourth fastest time on ahead of Honda colleagues Marco Melandri and Nicky Hayden. Capirossi’s Ducati team-mate Carlos Checa, who finished second to Mick Doohan here in 1997, was seventh quickest, with Colin Edwards, Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano completing the top ten. The only crash today in the MotoGP class came from Rubén Xaus, who escaped uninjured from a high-speed tumble that wrecked his Yamaha.

Sebastián Porto scored only his second ever dry weather victory at this circuit last season and showed signs of a repeat in the first qualifying practice for the 250cc class. Porto bounced back from a difficult start to the season to hold off the challenge of Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner this afternoon, taking provisional pole position in a time of 2’05.530. Hiroshi Aoyama qualified fourth fastest to complete the provisional front row whilst his team-mate Dani Pedrosa, who leads the current standings by 27 points from Stoner, was sixth. Alex de Angelis, Héctor Barberá and Andrea Dovizioso complete the second row.

Rossi takes fourth pole of the season at Assen
Qualifying Friday 24th -Valentino Rossi set the quickest Qualifying time on Friday to start the seventh round of the MotoGP World Championship from pole position for the fourth time this season as he searches for his six win from seven rounds in Saturday ’s 75th anniversary Gauloises TT Assen. The MotoGP World Champion, who leads current the series by 58 points over Marco Melandri, was in stunning form at the end of an incident packed qualifying practice held in scorching temperatures touching 36ºC.

Sete Gibernau, Marco Melandri, Colin Edwards, Nicky Hayden and Loris Capirossi all posted fast laps with around six minutes remaining before a moment of bizarre calm before the final storm as several riders, including Rossi, coasted around waiting for clear track before launching their final pole attacks. Rossi timed his run to perfection, clocking a lap of 1’58.936 to scupper an effort from Gibernau, the only rival who managed to seriously threaten the Italian’s dominance.

“I was lucky because I was able to use my qualifying tyres to 100%,” reflected Rossi after the session. “With the first one I set a 1’59.4, which was a great lap, but I looked at it and thought maybe I could go a little faster. I had to wait a while because there were a lot of riders waiting for me on the last lap but I left it until the last moment and set another very good lap in 1’58. I’m happy to be on pole position because tomorrow for sure will be a hard race. We’ll wait to see what the weather does but if the temperatures are like today it will be very tough for the riders and the tyres.”

Rossi's Gauloises Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards set a vastly improved lap time. Cheered on by a vast army of travelling British fans, Edwards starts from the second row after taking 1.5 seconds off his best time from yesterday to take sixth place on the grid.

Ruben Xaus and David Checa will start from 16th and 17th places respectively on their Fortuna Yamaha Team YZR-M1s. In a difficult qualifying session both riders focused their efforts on finding a good race pace and are confident with the overall result.

High temperatures and blazing sunshine continued today, with the thermometers reaching 36ºC during the afternoon session. However, the local weather forecast is predicting that the early summer heat wave will end abruptly tomorrow morning, with thunderstorms expected to continue throughout the day.

Valentino Rossi (Gauloises Yamaha Team) 1st, 1'58.936
"I am very happy because it is great to ride at this track on a qualifying tyre - the emotion is incredible. The bikes are so fast and this track also, even with the modifications it is still one of the best in the world. I was lucky because I was able to use both of my qualifying tyres at 100%. With the first one I set a 1'59.4, which was a great lap, but I looked at it and thought maybe I could go a little faster. I had to wait a while because there were a lot of riders waiting for me on the last lap and I left it until the last moment, because it's better to have no one in front of you here when you are trying to set a fast lap. The last lap of 1'58 was fantastic. I'm happy to start from pole position because tomorrow for sure will be a hard race. We'll wait to see what the weather does but if the temperatures are like today it will be very tough for the riders and the tyres."

Rossi heads up Giberneau, Edwards and Hayden in front of the huge Assen crowd.

Rossi Wins the 75th Aniversary Dutch TT on Saturday
Saturday 25th - Valentino Rossi once again proved that he is the man for the big occasion as he took victory in the 75th anniversary of the Gauloises TT Assen in another exciting MotoGP race on Saturday.

Sete Gibernau remains fourth in the championship behind Max Biaggi after losing out on fourth place in today’s race to Nicky Hayden. Gibernau lapped behind Melandri as his young team-mate led in the early stages of the race but, having lost his Chief Mechanic Juan Martínez for the opening day of qualifying due to illness, he was unable to maintain the pace in the second half of the race and eventually dropped back to fifth.

Biaggi fought his way up to sixth place after a bad start that saw him down in eleventh after the first lap, winning a tight battle with former Dutch TT winner Alex Barros that went all the way to the final lap. Shinya Nakano made the most of a terrific start, when he briefly held third place after starting from fourth on the grid, to take another top ten finish in eighth on the constantly improving Kawasaki, although his team-mate Alex Hofmann was denied a similar result as he was forced to retire after six laps when battling for ninth.

The final top ten positions went to Ducati pair Carlos Checa and Loris Capirossi, who had an entertaining battle on the Italian machines, whilst Troy Bayliss called on the experience of his previous wins here in World Superbikes to hold off the challenge of Rubén Xaus, John Hopkins and Makoto Tamada. David Checa won the chase with former World Champion Kenny Roberts for the final point in just his third MotoGP appearance as a replacement for Toni Elías, who hopes to back in action for the eagerly awaited return of the USGP at Laguna Seca in two weeks’ time.

Sebastián Porto clinched his first victory of the season in the 250cc race with a masterful ride that saw him take the lead form Jorge Lorenzo at the end of the penultimate lap before setting the quickest time of the race to hold off a late challenge from Dani Pedrosa. Lorenzo had led the way throughout after starting from pole position and bravely hung on to third place despite riding with a titanium plate and seven screws in the collarbone he broke just thirteen days previously at Catalunya. With Casey Stoner struggling to sixth place and Andrea Dovizioso seventh, Pedrosa now leads the championship with an advantage of 37 and 41 points respectively over the Australian and the Italian.

Rossi's exploits boost MotoGP TV audiences
June 15th - With five victories out of six races so far this season, one could expect that Valentino Rossi’s domination would disappoint the MotoGP fans, but the way the Italian superstar reaches success is actually so entertaining and exciting that audiences keep growing every race weekend.

Rossi’s win at Catalunya last Sunday scored again record audiences in his home country, where Italia 1’s broadcast was followed by almost 8.5 million viewers, with a 48.18% market share.

Surprisingly, the audience in Spain was also outstanding despite the fact that Rossi’s victim of the day was Sete Gibernau, in front of his Barcelona crowd. TVE-1 had 33.3% of the audience tuned to the MotoGP race, and did even better (38,6%) for the 250cc race, where Spain’s young hope Dani Pedrosa won his third consecutive GP. The total audience was 2.8 and 2.1 million respectively.

MotoGP enjoys wealthy audiences both in Italy and Spain thanks to the success of their riders. In the United Kingdom, BBC is consolidating very good ratings without having a local hero in the leading positions. The broadcast from the Catalunya Grand Prix scored 1.4 million viewers, with a 16.3% share.

Other countries also have had significant audience figures for the past few MotoGP races. As an example, Nelonen/Channel Four Finland scored 32% market share for the last round of the 125cc World Championship, where Mika Kallio is one of the main protagonists.

GAULOISES YAMAHA TEAM HEAD FOR HISTORIC DATE AT ASSEN
Coinciding with the year of Yamaha’s 50th anniversary, two legendary players in the history of motorcycle racing come together this weekend as the Gauloises Yamaha Team heads to the historic circuit of Assen for the 75th edition of the Dutch TT. VALENTINO ROSSI:
A SPECIAL RACETRACK

The reigning World Champion became the first Yamaha rider ever to score five victories from the first six premier class races of the year at Catalunya last Sunday, a record he credits to the great job being done by the entire team and their partners.

“The race time at Catalunya was 40 seconds faster than last year, so that shows that the work we have done with the bike is incredible,” says Rossi. “Also Michelin have done a fantastic job because I was able to put in three very fast laps at the end to win the race, including the lap record, so the tyres have made a huge improvement. The advantage in the standings means we can work nice and calmly in the team and that is a big help.”

Including his performances in the final three rounds of 2004, Rossi has now been on the podium at the last nine races, the first Yamaha rider to do so since Wayne Rainey in 1992-93, and he is hoping that continuing work with the YZR-M1 machine can help him extend his run well beyond this Saturday’s historic race. “On Monday after the race at Catalunya we were able to test some new engine parts that we might use later in the season, so we are always trying to improve. Of course, I want to be on the podium at every race but my main objective is to win the championship.

“The season has started well and we want to continue that. It has been nice to have a weekend off after two tough races because the whole team have been working hard. Now we go to Assen and it is going to be another hard Grand Prix. I’m looking forward to it; I think it will be another beautiful battle.

“For sure Gibernau and Melandri will both be fast there but racing close together with them is great. I like Assen too; it’s one of my favourite circuits. It’s a very special racetrack, unlike anything else in MotoGP, and the atmosphere is incredible – always a lot of people. The only question is the weather because you never know if it will rain.”

Brno (Czech Republic), Thursday 16 June: Ducati Xerox Team riders James Toseland and Régis Laconi wrapped up their second two-day testing session in a week at the legendary Brno circuit in the Czech Republic.

The four days of testing gave both riders a final opportunity to prepare for the forthcoming round of the World Superbike championship at Misano Adriatico (24-26 June), as well as the subsequent Brno event in mid-July.

Conditions were much improved from last week's cold and windy outing, and despite the occasional shower, the team was able to get down to some serious mid-season work at one of its two optioned testing circuits. As well as tyre testing for Pirelli, the sole supplier for the SBK championship, the Ducati Xerox Team riders also carried out development work on several new components for the 999, including a lower steering clamp and MotoGP-derived brake callipers. Both riders set their best times (Toseland 2m03.2s, Laconi 2m03.4s) on race tyres yesterday.

Toseland, who had never even seen Brno before, summed up his first experience on the Czech track: "It's really good, a bit like Mugello with long, fast, flowing corners. I'm quite pleased with the way the test went and the bike is working good. I missed a bit of time when I went off yesterday and today the conditions were not as good, but I feel sure that I could have knocked quite a bit off my best time without that crash".

Laconi, who lapped a couple of tenths off his team-mate's pace, declared: "I found it a bit difficult to get into the rhythm of this track mainly due to the conditions, but I'm sure that in July, when it'll be much hotter, things will be a lot easier. We've already got quite a good set-up for the race, but you've got to remember that conditions will be different when we come back here".

The Brno circuit, which extends over 5.4 kilometres, has not been a fixture of the World Superbike calendar since 1996. It has twice been the venue for a round of the championship; in 1993, when the two wins went to Carl Fogarty (Ducati) and Scott Russell (Kawasaki), while three years later it was the turn of 2005 points leader Troy Corser to notch up a double win on a Promotor Ducati 916, run by current Ducati Xerox team manager, Davide Tardozzi.

DUCATI’s NEW DESMO OWNERS CLUB WEBSITE NOW ONLINE
Bologna (Italy), May 31, 2005 - As the Desmo Owners Club Presidents meet “physically” (for the D.O.C. World President’s Meeting in Mugello today), a new “virtual club-house” will be revealed. As of Tuesday, May 31, 2005, the new website dedicated to the Desmo Owners Clubs (D.O.C.) is online.

The brand new site at http://www.ducaticlubs.com is a reference point for Desmo fans worldwide providing tons of information, event descriptions, pictures from the amazing world of D.O.C. Ducatisti and much more. As Ducati President and CEO, Federico Minoli, says, “The Ducati Desmo Owner Clubs are a great way for Ducatisti to express the passion of our Ducati Tribe. Whether you’re looking for a riding group, track day, bike gathering or are simply interested in meeting other Ducatisti in your area, the D.O.C. are the perfect solution.”

There are clubs all over the world: across Europe and North America, in Asia and South America, and soon in Africa too. With the new site, members can keep up-to-date on Ducati activities planned in their home town, and they can also find out what is going on around the world, allowing them to participate in Ducati events while away from home, while on vacation, or even on a business trip. The new Ducati clubs site is making D.O.C. membership valid worldwide.

Even if the new site was created by Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A., it is the D.O.C themselves that will give it life. Each club has the opportunity to express their individuality and their pride in Ducati in their own way. The clubs themselves create profiles, descriptions and photos of who they are and what they do, and they decide what events to organize and publicize. Ducati has all different kinds of clients and clearly, there are all different kinds of clubs.

D.O.C. membership provides entrance to the world of Ducati, with all the passion and fun that comes with being part of a big and dynamic community. Visit the Ducati Clubs site to find the club nearest you and learn how to join in on the fun. Anyone with a passion for Ducati is a potential D.O.C. member.

Here's some of the great female singers we'vebeen listening to on our CD player. Check them out and listen online at Amazon.com!

Natasha Bedingfield
Sexy, beautiful, and she can really sing. A pop disco diva in the Kylie Minogue style. GREAT!

Skye Sweetnam
A very cute 16 year old teen pop rocker very much like another of our favorites, Avril Lavigne. Sky sings the theme song on the cool TV show Radio Free Roscoe on The N Channel.
